The Woman Who Always Showed Up: Thank You Helen Johnson đź‘Ź
DLA Presents the Woman in the Arena Award
This week at the monthly General Meeting, the Downtown Lincoln Association Board proudly recognizes Helen Johnson with the Woman in the Arena Award, recognizing her years of dedicated service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Lincoln community.
Helen will be retiring from the DLA Board at the end of the year after serving in many important capacities over the years, most recently as the DLA Secretary. While she is stepping down from her board role, anyone who knows Helen knows that she will remain deeply active in nonprofit and community work throughout Lincoln. Her passion, voice, and presence will continue to make an impact long after her board term concludes.
To honor her contributions, the DLA presented Helen with the Woman in the Arena Award, a crystal vase inscribed with words that best describe her active commitment.
“The credit belongs to the woman who is actually in the arena… who does actually strive to do the deeds; who spends herself in a worthy cause… her place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
The quote, inspired by Theodore Roosevelt’s famous “Man in the Arena” passage, reflects Helen perfectly. She has always been the person in the arena, stepping forward, taking action, and giving her time and heart to support the DLA and the broader Lincoln community.
We will truly miss her on the Board, but we know this is not a goodbye. It is a heartfelt thank you for years of dedication, leadership, and service.
